Tehran publisher to review Mikis Theodorakis’ oeuvre

TEHRAN – Hanooz Publications plans to turn the spotlight on the oeuvre of the prolific Greek songwriter and film composer Mikis Theodorakis during a session, which will be held today at 6 p.m.

Musicians Nader Mashayekhi and Christophe Rezai, art expert Mohammad Zamiran, ethnomusicologist Mehran Purmandan and animator Sorush Rezai are scheduled to speak at the meeting.

Theodorakis, 90, has written over 1000 songs, seven symphonies, four operas and some ballets. He is best known outside Greece for his film scores,which include “Zorba the Greek”, “Z” and “State of Siege”.


London festival to screen “Junk Girl”

TEHRAN – “Junk Girl” directed by Iranian animator Mohammad Zare’ will go on screen during Animation Night at the Crystal Palace International Film Festival (CPIFF) in London’s Stanley Halls on November 14.

“Junk Girl”, which is based on American director and writer Tim Burton’s “The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories”, tells the story of a smelly living doll that is made out of rubbish.

The CPIFF will be running from November 6 to 28.


“Elegy” competing in Beijing student festival

TEHRAN - Iranian director Yusef Kargar’s acclaimed short “Elegy” is competing in the 14th International Student Film and Video Festival, which opened in the Chinese capital of Beijing on Sunday.

“Elegy” unfolds the bitter story of an old man who has been waiting for the return of his missing son for a period of 25 long years.

The festival, which is organized by the Beijing Film Academy every year, will run until on October 25.


Cypriot contest praises Iranian cartoonists

TEHRAN – Iranian artists Shahram Rezai, Farzaneh Vaziritabar and Amir Mirai have received honorable mentions at the 4th International Cartoon Contest, which is part of the 14th Olive Festival, in Kyrenia, Cyprus.

A jury composed of Musa Kayra from Cyprus, Yordanka Lyubenova Shiyakova from Bulgaria, John A. Lent from the USA, Muhittin Koroglu from Turkey and Grigoris Georgiou from Greece announced the winners on October 14.


Iranian troupe to perform “Timeloss” in Beirut

TEHRAN - Paris-based Mehr Theater Group led by Iranian director Amir-Reza Kuhestani plans to perform their widely-acclaimed play “Timeloss” at Beirut’s Home Works Forum on November 20 and 21.

“Timeloss” starring Hassan Majuni and Mahin Sadri tells the story of two former lovers sitting in a room bickering over an argument they have had so many times and began so many years ago that they know it by heart.

The play has previously been performed in Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the U.S. and several other countries.
